Design & print notes

Distinguish a yellow from a metallic finish

If the brief calls for gold, decide whether it means a yellow hue or an actual reflective finish. A flat yellow screen swatch does not specify metallic ink, foil or a production effect. Use this family to compare the hue direction, then discuss the finish separately with the supplier. Keep those two choices distinct in the artwork notes and approval process.

Test yellow at its intended size

Try your shortlisted yellow as both a large background and a small symbol. Check dark text on the yellow, and separately test yellow text against the intended background. Do not infer readability from the brightness of the swatch. In a chart or warning message, include a written label or recognizable shape so that the meaning does not depend on yellow alone.

Review the surrounding whites

Place the chosen yellow beside the paper or background white used in the finished design. Compare a cooler lemon direction with a warmer candidate under the same viewing conditions. For printed work, use a proof on the proposed stock and confirm the complete color reference with the printer. A copied HEX value is useful for a mockup but does not approve the physical result.
